Baroque in Munich - Seen Through the Lens of My Camera

Ceiling detail from Schleissheim Palace
Ceiling detail Schleissheim
This is a view through the lens of my camera of a few examples of the Baroque so prevalent in and around Munich - a small selection and in no way comprehensive.  Although I am an enthusiast, I am an amateur, not an art historian. In the course of time, I hope to add to the collection with pictures from all seasons and more details from the interiors.

The Baroque style originated in Rome, Italy around 1600 and spread throughout most of Europe. Typical for the style are grandeur, sensuous richness, drama and emotional exuberance. The lavishness of Baroque churches celebrated the victory of the Roman Catholic church over dissenters; the unlimited splendour of Baroque palaces paid homage to totalitarian power.

The last flowering of the Baroque was in southern Germany and Austria. In ornate churches, monasteries, and palaces, an extraordinarily rich but delicate style of stucco decoration was used in combination with painted surfaces to evoke subtle illusionistic effects.

For our sampling of Baroque I have chosen Nymphenburg Palace, the Cuvillies Theater, Schleissheim Palace just outside of Munich and some examples of religious architecture as found in the Asam Church, the Abbey Church of St. Anna and the Church of the Holy Spirit.

Our first stop will be at Nymphenburg Palace, former summer residence of the Bavarian monarchs.
