Middle of October almost, and we can still sit outside for a picnic lunch in a beer garden. It was a short bicycle ride to the Deer Park Beer Garden (Hirschgarten) and we found it almost empty. The weather is right but the season is over.

Golden October is what it is called - these beautiful fall days when you know that winter is approaching and every ray of sunshine counts. We decided to drive to Munich's "Hausberg", the most popular and closest mountain, just 70 kilometers south of Munich. Janos is still recovering from a bad cold but we hoped a ride in the car and then the cableway up the mountain wouldn't be too much. The views of the Karwendel mountain range and Walchensee were stunning. We snapped a few pictures and walked the short distance to the Berggasthaus for lunch. Another balmy October day. Janos is recovering from a bad cold so it seemed a little walk, nothing strenuous, was called for. In the late afternoon we strolled to the Old North Cemetery, it's not far, altogether we were probably out for about an hour. I had my camera with me, of course, and limited myself to using the Sol 45 lens. On the way home I tried to capture the feel and look of Görresstrasse, not my usual style or subject. What a lovely overcast day. Yes, overcast is just the right thing for photographing flowers in the Botanical Garden. It's actually a high fog that hides the sun and will disappear around noon, common in the Fall. The autumn colors in the Botanical Garden were much more brilliant than elsewhere. There were hardly any visitors and I enjoyed the quiet, subdued atmosphere. On a mild autumn day in the search of autumn color, I got on my bike in the late afternoon and just sort of followed my nose. I moseyed around little side paths in the English Garden, looking for trees with some color, but mainly just enjoyed pedaling and getting some exercise. The nice surprise was when I happened on the herd of sheep on my way home, the sun already low on the horizon. They keep the fields trimmed as they move around the park. Or in English - We're Fed Up! That was the motto of today's demonstration and parade. Hoping to have influence on the upcoming elections for the Bavarian Landtag on October 10, a large demonstration was held here in Munich. The title was “Mia hams satt”, Bavarian dialect for “We’re fed up” and was to call attention to environmental issues. Most of the slogans revolved around factory farming, bee mortality, air pollution and the use of pesticides. I don’t know how many participants there were but it looked like a big turnout. I rode there on my bike and marched a bit in solidarity, then stood to watch the parade pass by. It was a mild, sunny day and samba drummers were there to cheer on the crowds with their contagious rhythms. p.s. On the following morning I read in the news that there were an estimated 18,000 participants. |
