From Passau to Vienna
The vehicle: Same but different
I've already worked through most of my problems accepting the fact that Janos and I are now touring on e-bikes. It was a blow to the ego, but I finally had to admit that we were struggling along on our last bicycle tours, feeling bad tempered at the sight of a hill and cursing the wind if it didn't come from the right direction.
We decided BionX electric support would suit our purpose best, you still pedal and can adjust the amount of support to your own needs. It still feels like cycling and it is cycling. On our maiden voyage with our e-bikes along the Danube, which I will describe in this journal, I discovered I was still getting a real workout. I would say that sums up what I like best. I didn't feel I was lazing along, but I also didn't feel whipped from a climb. I was able to more or less maintain the same level of exertion regardless of wind and hills. We covered a greater distance than in the past few years and felt fine at the end of the day. What more could you want?
Of course, I realize the Danube Bike Path isn't exactly mountainous, but there are a few towns and churches prettily perched at the top of a hill, something which in the past we often found exasperating. On this trip we never hesitated to ride up to have a look.
We had our Koga Miyata Randonneurs converted to e-bikes using the conversion kit made by BionX, a Canadian company.
