Funtana to Letenye: Taking the waters

Monday June 24, 2013
We were up early, maybe in anticipation of our change in location which meant readying the van for the drive and not knowing exactly where we would be sleeping that night. We saw the sun rise and caught its beautiful rosy early morning glow as we listened to the waves lapping at the shore, a magical moment.

We drove all day and reached the Hungarian border sometime in the late afternoon. Driving through the hilly countryside of Croatia reminded me why I never would want to cycle there, it's just too hilly. Even in the van we avoided the small country roads that climb up and down every hill, and chose the highway. Shortly after crossing the border into Hungary we found a small town, Letenye, with a camping ground with its own thermal baths - or thermal baths with their own camping ground. There wasn't much going on in Letenye, especially on a Sunday, and there was only one other trailer in the camp, but there were lots of people in the hot pools. Hot springs are very common and also very popular in Hungary. Not only the elderly looking for a cure for their aches and pains but also many young people and families seem to enjoy soaking in the hot water.
We took a short ride around town, admired the stork nest, found an ATM to stock up on Hungarian Forints and returned to the camping grounds for a dunk in the hot water. Janos claimed the next day his shoulder hurt less. Thermal baths are said to be especially good for joint pain.

It was very hot when we arrived and the mosquitoes were vicious, but later in the evening it cooled down when stormy clouds filled the sky accompanied by a strong wind. It looked like we were in for bad weather.
