Sárvár day 2: A bike ride to Celldömölk
Thursday June 27, 2013It stopped raining today. After checking the weather report (we have Internet here) I knew it would, so I had mapped out a bike ride for us to Celldömölk. We saw in google that there would be a romanesque church ruin there and also a small exhibition of paintings by Mihály Munkácsy, which was enough interest to say our goal wasn't totally arbitrary. But it was mainly about the ride, I wanted to get back on my bike.
The road I chose to Celldömölk had too much traffic and no shoulder. The cars and trucks raced by which made it fairly unpleasant in spite of pretty countryside. Celldömölk is a larger town than Sárvár, but still a very quiet place. We stopped in a bakery for what looked like delicious Hungarian specialties that Janos remembered from his childhood. Either they forgot how to make those delicacies during the socialist era or else his taste has changed, perhaps both. The dough on the danishes was tough and the puff pastry was, well, just plain old puff pastry stuffed with a sausage. Nothing to write home about. Ah, childhood memories ... but that's another topic.

Sign in old Hungarian script which is thought to derive from or share a common ancestor with the Old Turkic script, and was probably in use by the 9th century. It is now seeing a revival associated with strong nationalist tendencies. Decorative but not very practical. Other areas of the Hungarian culture might deserve more attention.
We were luckier with the return section of the loop and had quiet country roads, perfect for us.
