Underway: First day out to Brixen/Bressanone
Wednesday June 5, 2013
After days of anxiety prior to departure, I did manage to pack and we were ready to hit the road by early afternoon on the set date. I was exhausted but I won't waste time describing my state of mind before we leave for a trip. I have written about it before and once we leave, I'm okay.
We had a gorgeous day after weeks of rain and were relieved to see that the roads were not crowded as we approached the Brenner Pass into Italy. Janos was at the wheel, happy to have a car again, and I was free to admire the scenery as it passed by. I felt a few slight twinges of regret that we weren't cycling, but I am ready to discover (and maybe love?) a new style of travel. Besides, we wouldn't have even gotten this far if we were riding our bikes.

Our camping was peaceful with views to the surrounding mountains - and expensive, as are most camping grounds in Italy. Too tired to cook that night, we had pizza at the campground restaurant. The restaurant was also good and expensive if you ordered anything but pizza. The wine was probably good, too, but definitely too expensive for Italy.
Then came the usual scramble in the van, trying to find where we put things. There are so many little nooks and crannies to stow away your belongings and if you don't put things where they belong, they are in the way. That was about it, a day that went smoothly, but it was exciting to be on our way.
