A day in the saddle: What goes up must come down

We wake up to a sunny but not too hot day - perfect for our ride to Matrei which lies about 30 km from Lienz on the Isel River, and about 350 m higher.

Much of the way we have a bike path, and always beautiful views to the mountains. We have from the very start a gradual climb, the kind that you don't see, but it makes you feel like you have the breaks on or possibly you aged 20 years over night.
As we approach Matrei we have a visibly steep stretch. I can deal with that much better. I get into my granny gears and work my way up. Very important to be able to see your progress.
We take a break in Matrei, a town which due to its beautiful location in the mountains thrives on cyclists, hikers and in the winter skiers.
The ride back is a dream and I'm surprised that I can coast on what looked like almost flat on the way up. This was our first tour this year and a great start into the season.
