The Last One

I was all set for our ride 15 km to the west of Munich, to our second-to-last hochbunker. Before leaving, I cast one more look at the website description of the structure to make sure I would find it - then I noticed the small print. The hochbunker had been demolished in 2013. Glad I saw that. A quick change of plans - now it was to be the ride to the last hochbunker.
This ride took us through the city to the east of Munich, a ride I would have normally saved for a Sunday when there is less traffic. Nevertheless, it was a good ride. After we found the hochbunker, we continued on to Messestadt Riem, a large trade fair and congress center, located on the grounds that from 1939 to 1992 were the location of the Munich international airport.
We took a different route home, it was quite pleasant, and on the way stopped in a beer garden for lunch.
30km

We rode through some residential areas and open fields, not far from downtown Munich. Behind weeds and bushes and with lots of danger and do not enter signs, I spied this abandoned greenhouse with broken panes of glass. The weeds were doing nicely.

We are having the driest summer on record, not the hottest though.

My final hochbunker. This one is inhabited. It is surrounded by a very thick hedge, in keeping with the thick walls of the bunker itself.

Following the route I had planned, we found ourselves on a dead end road with lots of junk yards, not really my intention. Well, another interesting discovery anyway. We then retraced our steps and found a better road.

Here we are on the area that was Munich's airport until 1992. In 2005 it was made into a park when the German Garden Show was held here. The lake is popular for swimming. Note the big pretzel.

Another lake, not for swimming, is in front of the main building of the congress center. I liked the sculpture in the center showing sections of the Alps.

On the way home we passed an inviting Bavarian beer garden and stopped for lunch.

Surprise, not so Bavarian after all - it was run by Italians! A great combination, in my opinion - beer garden and pizzeria. And we had table #27, my lucky number.
